Columbia County Data Center
As conversations around growth and data center development continue in our region, the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce is stepping forward to provide clarity and local context.
Our Chamber President, Heath Taylor, has authored a new op-ed, “Let’s Talk About Growth — And Work Together to Shape Our Future,” encouraging informed, community-driven dialogue around what this potential investment could mean for Columbia County.
In conjunction, the Chamber has launched a fact-based website addressing key questions we’re hearing from chamber members and area residents.
The goal is simple: to ensure conversations are grounded in accurate, locally-relevant information rather than misinformation or misaligned examples from other markets.

Data Centers to Foot the Bill for Power
According to Atlanta News First, the Georgia Public Service Commission (GPSC) has reviewed the signed agreements in place to protect consumers from increased power bills.
“We share the public’s concerns about costs to provide energy to new large-load customers, including data centers,” said Public Service Commission Chairman Jason Shaw. “This agreement ensures data centers – or, if necessary, Georgia Power itself – will pay for this new infrastructure. Existing customers will not."
According to Kim Greene, CEO of Georgia Power, the contracts outline consumer protections and include safeguards for any scenario.
“We have already signed 9,500 megawatts of contracts, so we are not building this generation speculatively," said Greene. "We know they are coming, we have the contracts, and the protections to ensure these assets get paid for by these large load customers."

Greene also says the agreements will give Georgia Power the ability to better stabilize rates for its customers.
“Data centers are allowing us to keep rates flat and lower than they’d otherwise be,” Greene said. “So we know that our customers care about affordability, we care about affordability.”
