Let’s Talk About Growth — And Work Together to Shape Our Future

An op-ed by Columbia County Chamber President & CEO, Heath Taylor - April 2026

Across our region, conversations about growth are becoming more common and that’s a positive sign. Growth means opportunity, but it also means questions. Lately, many of those questions center on data centers and what they might mean for Columbia County.

First, let me be clear: these questions are fair, and they’re exactly what we should be asking.

Columbia County has always taken pride in growing the right way. We value our quality of life. We value strong schools, reliable infrastructure, safe roads, and the things that make this a great place to live, work, and raise a family. So, when something new comes our way, it’s natural and smart to want to understand it fully before forming an opinion.

At the same time, data centers are not something new to the world. For years, they’ve quietly powered much of what we rely on every single day - banking systems, healthcare networks, online learning, and the technology that keeps our families and businesses connected. As demand for those services increases, communities like ours are being considered for new investment.

And it makes sense why. We have the land, the infrastructure, the workforce, and a reputation for supporting responsible, well-planned development. But being able to attract new industry doesn’t mean we shouldn’t ask what it means for us. In fact, that’s the most important part of the process.

Here are the questions I hear from Chamber members and neighbors alike:

  • What about energy use?
  • What is a closed loop system?
  • How many jobs will this bring?
  • What does this mean for taxpayers long term?

These are real, thoughtful questions and they deserve real, clear answers.

We’re also exploring where opportunities exist for our local businesses: construction, skilled trades, suppliers, service providers, and the small businesses that support employees and their families. Growth doesn’t happen in one lane; it touches many parts of our community.

But here’s the challenge: when people search online, much of the information out there doesn’t reflect our situation. Some of it is outdated. Some of it comes from communities very different from ours. And some of it is simply incorrect. That’s how good conversations can get clouded by misinformation.

So instead of letting rumors fill the gaps, the Chamber decided to step in and provide clarity.

We’ve launched a simple, fact-focused website dedicated to data center development right here in Columbia County. No spin. No agenda. Just straightforward information and answers to the questions our community is actually asking.

We’re not here to tell anyone what to think. That’s not our job. Our role is to make sure you have the facts you need to make informed decisions.

Good decisions come from informed people and from communities willing to ask questions and work together.

Growth has always been a balancing act. Columbia County has succeeded because we welcome opportunity while protecting what matters most. We listen. We collaborate. We stay engaged.

And that’s exactly what this moment calls for.

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to visit www.columbiacountydatacenter.com to learn more. If you don’t see an answer to your question, ask us. We’ll make sure you get one.

Together, with clarity, collaboration, and community involvement, we can continue moving Columbia County forward — the right way.
